The director | Three questions to the director

A tireless jack-of-all-trades, François Kohler has spent close to 20 years writing, directing and producing works for cinema and television. After earning a law degree in 1982 from Université de Neuchâtel, Switzerland, he decided that his future lay in filmmaking and enrolled in the Institut National Supérieur des Arts du Spectacle (INSAS), in Brussels.

He launched his prolific film career in 1986 with two works: a short fiction called Off Palace, followed by a documentary, Cine-Piazza. From 1986 to 1998, the Swiss filmmaker wrapped up a dozen short, medium-length and feature films. He has also directed about 30 programs for Switzerland’s French-language television since 1990. In 1994, his documentary Samuel Buri, un portrait screened at the Biennale Internationale du Film sur l’Art de Paris. His short fiction Le bout du tunnel (1995) and documentary Lioba, au cœur des armaillis (1998) have been broadcast a number of times on both Swiss and French TV.

Between 1999 and 2004, François Kohler directed and produced or co-produced a series of documentaries with his company Instant Film. Le Lama et la turquoise (2000) won the jury prize at the International Mountain Film Festival in Trento, Italy. Following Naissance d’une expo (2002) and Home sweet home (2003), he directed and co-produced the documentary Le souffle du désert / Desert Wind (2004). Three years in the making, Desert Wind is Kohler’s first collaboration with the National Film Board of Canada.

NY's reviews :

“Tracks thirteen men who have been brought together for a two-week trek in the Tunisian desert…the true subject matter is the men’s worries, their thoughts on relationships, and, in general, the psyche of the modern male…Watching the subjects’ emotional inhibitions get gradually peeled away is often fascinating.”

New York Magazine

“As the rigors of the trek become more grueling, the revelations grow more intimate. In the funniest scene, the men take turns stripping naked and talking about their bodies…DESERT WIND manages to take us to a seldom-visited place: the hidden corners of the straight male mind.”

Dana Stevens, The New York Times

“Led by a Swiss psychotherapist, the men confront their emotions and explode our beer-and-football notions of male bonding…their newfound openness with each other and themselves makes for funny, moving and riveting viewing.”

Steve Gartland, The L Magazine

“Fascinating.”
